Bagnath

Bagnath temple is one of the most visited temples in Bageshwar. Legend goes that Lord Shiva came here in the form of a Tiger (Bagh). Since then the temple is known as Bagnath Temple (literally, Bagh means “Tiger” and Nath means “Lord”) and after the name of temple, the town is known as Bageshwar. There is one more saying about Bagnath Temple that the sacred shrine was built during the reign of the Chand’s dynasty but that time no one was there who could install the Shivlinga in the sanctum. Shri Manorath Pandey of Palayn village did a hard penance and requested Lord Shiva to accept their pray and help them. Only after receiving blessings from Lord Shiva, they got succeed in installing the Shivlinga on the day of Shivratri (day, in which lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married). Since then a massive festival and a fair is celebrated here on the day of Shivratri to mark this auspicious occasion....
